Delivery of Capacity Development in Force Protection

Background

Artios was contracted by SKA International Group at the end of 2022 to support the training design and delivery of scope of works in a project to provide the Somali National Army (SNA) with training, equipment and construction resources to enable them to enhance their integral Force Protection capabilities.

Artios supported SKA International through the design and delivery of a bespoke Force Protection training management package, tailored to the specific needs of the SNA. This provided training to Patrol Base Construction Supervisors, Construction Pioneers and Plant Operators.

The project was envisioned to address the requirement of enhancing the physical protection for SNA bases securing vital routes across Somalia. As a Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) project, it was a great opportunity for Artios to work with fellow framework suppliers to deliver this important work on behalf of the UK Government.

OUR ROLE

The objective of the project was to enhance the SNA's survivability, enabling them to implement Force Protection principles in the construction and maintenance of their operational bases throughout Somalia

Artios designed and delivered the training based on a Needs Analysis of the Force Protection enhancements that were required and could be sustainably achieved by the SNA with the resources available to them. This included developing a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) designed to help support the adoption of long term and sustainable change. The training was based on British Army Force Protection doctrine and Plant Operating Procedures. The training course was delivered over 7 weeks in Baidoa, Somalia, with the first 4 weeks focused on developing the theoretical fundamentals of construction of Forward Operating Bases:  Principles of Defence, Site Reconnaissance, Design and Construction methods and procedures. The final 3 weeks focused on the practical elements and integrated collective training with the Plant Operators and associated machinery.
